Adding individual names and numbers to hi vis safety vests is a practical way to improve crew identification, reduce lost PPE, and give your team a professional look on site. As a factory-direct manufacturer, Yolite produces monogrammed vests for PPE distributors, uniform companies, and safety product wholesalers in the US and EU. We have produced reflective safety apparel for 20+ years and hold a BSCI audit. Below we explain the personalization process, placement rules, and what you need to prepare before requesting a quote.
Personalization Methods: Screen Print vs Heat Transfer
We use screen printing and heat transfer for monogramming. Both methods work well on the fluorescent mesh and solid polyester fabrics we use for our vests.
Screen Printing
Screen printing is most cost-effective when every vest gets the same text or number, such as a company name or a department code on the back. The setup cost is spread over many pieces, and the print is durable, bright, and stands up well to repeated washing. For large runs of identical personalization, screen printing often gives the lowest unit cost.
Heat Transfer
For individual names and numbers—like “J. SMITH” on the chest or a different employee number on each vest—heat transfer is usually more practical. We can produce variable data without making a separate screen for every name. Heat transfer generally gives good adhesion on both mesh and solid fabric, but the final choice depends on the exact fabric and placement. We will recommend the best method when you send your design.
Which Method Should You Choose?
If all vests have the same text, screen printing is often the better value. If each vest needs a unique name or number, heat transfer is the standard choice. We can also combine both: screen print the company logo on the back and heat transfer individual names on the chest. Tell us your quantity and design, and we will advise the most cost-effective approach.
Placement Guidelines for Names and Numbers
The location of the monogram affects both visibility and compliance. The most common placements are:

- Chest area: left chest or right chest, printed on the fluorescent background fabric, not over reflective tape. This is the typical spot for an employee name or ID number.
- Back panel: below or above the reflective bands, usually larger for names, numbers, or both. This is often used for a company name or a large employee number for identification from a distance.
- Sleeve or shoulder: smaller prints, sometimes used for department codes or additional identification. This works well on vests with sleeves or wide shoulder areas.
We always advise keeping the print off the retroreflective strips. Printing over reflective material reduces the amount of light reflected and can push the vest out of compliance with ANSI/ISEA 107 or EN ISO 20471. If you must print on or across a reflective band, we need to check the gap and area requirements carefully before production.
For vests with cross belts or harness straps, placement is even more critical. In our experience, for reflective cross belts and harnesses, buckles create gaps in the reflective band; each gap must not exceed 50 mm, so keep buckles shorter than 5 cm. Adding a printed name on top of the belt would add another gap and may exceed the allowed total, so we recommend placing personalization on the body of the vest instead of the belt.
Compliance: Keeping the Vest Certified
Personalization should not change the certified performance of the vest. That means the fluorescent background area, reflective tape width, and placement must still meet the standard for the class you are buying.
We have a detailed article on this site titled “Does a Logo Make a Custom Hi Vis Vest Non-Compliant? ANSI & EN ISO 20471 Rules”. It covers logos in general, and the same rules apply to names and numbers. In short:
- Printing on the fluorescent fabric is generally acceptable if it does not reduce the required background material below the minimum area.
- Printing over reflective tape is not recommended because it blocks retroreflection and creates unapproved gaps.
- For vests with cross belts or harness straps, buckles and adjusters already create small gaps in the reflective band. Adding a printed name on the belt could create another gap, so keep personalization off the straps.
Our factory holds EN ISO 20471 and EN 17353 certificates, and all our standard hi vis vests are built to ANSI/ISEA 107 classes and EN ISO 20471 classes. We use 3M Scotchlite reflective material to meet the retroreflection requirements. When we produce monogrammed vests, the final garment is checked to ensure it still meets the relevant standard before shipment.
How to Prepare Your Monogrammed Vest Order
To get an accurate quote for monogrammed vests, please send us the following:

- Vest style and color: mesh or solid fabric, zipper or hook-and-loop closure, yellow/orange/red/blue/black, any pocket configuration.
- List of names and numbers: a spreadsheet (Excel or CSV) is easiest. Include exactly how each name should appear, including capitalization and any special characters.
- Placement and size: where on the vest (chest, back, etc.) and how large the text should be. We can advise on standard sizes that maintain compliance.
- Print color: usually black or dark blue on fluorescent backgrounds for contrast, but we can match your brand color if it provides enough contrast.
- Target quantity: total number of vests and how many different names/numbers. This affects pricing because we have to handle variable data.
The exact lead time and minimum order quantity for individual name and number printing depend on the design, quantity, and current production schedule. As a rough guide, personalization adds time for preparing and applying the names and numbers to the standard production time, and the minimum order for this service is based on the design and the number of different names and numbers. We will confirm both after reviewing your design and quantity. Please request a quote with your specific details.
FAQ
Can you print a different name on each vest?
Yes. We can handle variable data for individual names and numbers. Provide the list in a spreadsheet, and we will print each vest accordingly. This is common for crews where every worker has their own vest.
Will monogramming affect the ANSI/EN certification?
If the print is placed on the fluorescent background and does not cover the reflective tape, the vest should remain compliant with the class it was designed for. We verify each order before shipment. For more details, see our article on logo compliance.
What is the minimum order quantity for monogrammed vests?
The minimum depends on whether you need individual names or the same name on all vests. For individual names, the MOQ is based on the design and the number of different names. For identical text, the MOQ is usually lower. Contact us with your quantity and design for an exact answer.
How long does personalization add to lead time?
Personalization adds time for preparing and applying the names and numbers to our standard production lead time. The exact number depends on the number of different names and the placement complexity. We will give you a firm date when you place the order.
What file format do you need for the names and numbers?
We do not need artwork files for simple text names and numbers; a spreadsheet with the exact text and placement instructions is enough. If you want a specific font or logo, send a vector file (AI, PDF, or high-resolution PNG).
